The project expands a local developer's portfolio of multi-family residential properties by respecting a historic school building that prior developers unsuccessfully sought to demolish. The local community resisted previous development efforts on the site and have embraced the current design that simultaneously respects the historic character of the building and renovates it to support 21st century housing needs.

The residential units feature high ceilings along the exterior walls marked by generous windows, a black accent wall in the living space as a nod to the classrooms’ chalkboards, spacious kitchens with islands, clean lines, and high-end appliances. Bedrooms include thoughtfully placed reading lamps and visually clean bathrooms with ample storage. The developer and architect have been working closely with a Historic Tax Credit consultant to support the project financially and get the building listed on the National Historic Registry with the National Park Service.

The common spaces at Schoolhouse Flats are unrivaled in the Central PA housing market. They include a building lounge off the main lobby anchored by a large fireplace and the school’s original gym’s scoreboard, a fitness center, a resident-only courtyard, rooftop decks, and potentially a restaurant tenant on-site. The school’s southern facade sits 50ft from Market Street and will include a new community park to activate the historic lawn along a main corridor within the Borough.
